My Vintage-Bohemian Tank Top's Story

It all started with Pinterest. Don't most things? Ironically, this project sprouted from the idea of creating a capsule wardrobe. I was pumped, so I dumped the contents of my drawer on my bed and prepared to put together a stylish, color coordinated wardrobe of my favorite pieces. As I stared at my clothes, however, I decided that I did not have ENOUGH favorite pieces in my closet to make a capsule wardrobe. So I dumped the contents of my sewing wardrobe onto my bed as well, delighting in my mess of possibilities. Minimizing would have to come later.

Sorting through my great-grandmother's stash of fabric, I found this white, vintage check practically calling my name. Crop-top? Yes. Comfortable fit? Yes? I transferred my ideas to paper, using my standard bodice block, and pinned it to Jaqueline to test it out.

Beautiful! Plenty of room to move and make adjustments (I like to prepare for the worst...:)).

Besides the fact that this tank is my first created clothing design, I love it because of its story. This was my great-grandmother's material, and I have preserved that little piece of her in my everyday life. All items of clothing have a story. I am learning to care about the stories behind them. Am I supporting something that is helping or hurting others? Is my fashion obsession loving or exploiting?
Is loving others important enough to change my shopping habits? Is it important enough to pledge to shop only fair trade, ethically made fashion?
