The Similarities of Christianity and Swing Dancing
Just a few days ago, my friends and I decided to try out some crazy dance stunts, the dangerous kind because the 'safe' kind soon bored us. Chairs were stacked hastily and pushed out of the way, speakers were turned on and turned up, and the rhythm took us away. Time has a way of messing with your mind. It can convince you that Mondays are monsters even though they really are just a day like all of the rest. And it can tamper with your wisdom storage, making the wildest ideas funny, the dumbest invention captivating, and the craziest stunt doable. Time came out on top early that night, and before eight o' clock we were ready to try 'Sudden Death'.
I am a very trusting person, generally, but keeping my feet from breaking my 'fall' was a process. My friends laughed, urging me to REALLY trust THIS time. I was trusting, I replied. Gradually, I surrendered my control and fell gracefully. It is one thing to say that you trust someone and a-very-nother thing to fall face-first, letting them stop you.
Listening to our girl's bible study discussion, I realized that Christianity and swing dancing had much more in common than I had thought. You have to actually step out on the waters if you want to see if Jesus will catch you. If you really believe that He will take care of you, then prove it. Oh, yes. This is a challenge. Consider yourself dared.
I've been practicing surrender for at least a year now, but I realized that there were still some things that I hesitated to do. Doubts infiltrate my thoughts, asking if it really is a good idea*, asking if it will even make any difference at all, asking what if I fail.
*-- Sometimes that question can be a good one and should be given consideration. I recommend listening to it before trying "Sudden Death". Hindsight is 20-20. :) --
Somewhere, somehow, sometime, it will all have to come down to whether or not you think that God is a liar. If he's a truth-teller, then we know that he will never leave us. If he will never leave us, then why on earth would we ever hesitate to take that leap of faith. Logically, our doubts don't even make sense. The God who literally is in control over every aspect of life, guiding people everywhere, turning the stars on, and carrying the emotional burdens of all who dump them on him, is saying "Hey, if you really trust me, then this isn't a big deal. Of course I can do it. Will you?"
Even still, it's hard. The here, now, and touchable has a huge effect on us. Thank God, it's a journey.
